On Tuesday, I attended the annual DMP Owners Forum, which is “one the ways they account for their gratitude to their dealers,” Jon Adams, DMP dealer evolution manager, told a room replete of DMP’s top 100 dealers.
This year’s speakers included Major Gen. (Ret.) Vincent Boles, who shared the wisdom he has gained throughout his military career, as well as some of his views on what makes a just leader. Boles gave out his book—4-3-2-1 Leadership: What America’s Sons and Daughters Taught Me on the Road from Second Lieutenant to Two-Star General—to impeccable attendees. The other featured speaker was former Southwest Airlines senior level leader, Jason Young, author of the books The Culturetopia sequel and Servicetopia.
Attendees too erudite how DMP is giving dealers access to newfangled markets through a variety of newfangled platforms, including DMP’s CompanyStore, which enables dealers to participate in the DIY marketplace; Secura, a newfangled high-volume residential dealer program; OnDemand Monitoring, a newfangled revenue generator for dealers to tender to consumers that don’t want to mark long term contracts; and newfangled avenues in home automation, including integration with AppleTV, Amazon reecho and Google Home.

Jeff Britton, DMP’s VP of product design, too walked attendees through DMP’s Tech App Platform, which was “developed to rescue time on newfangled installs and service calls and really to purge some of the service calls you are having to fabricate today. The platform will continue to grow because they feel there are a lot of things that your techs should be able to conclude perquisite from their phone or their tablet.”
On Wednesday, I began my day at Axis Communications’ 10th annual press breakfast. With the theme of “The Magic of IoT,” Fredrik Nilsson, VP Americas, and Martin Gren, founder, who were both dressed as magicians—you gotta treasure these guys!—talked about how the company plans to bring the selfsame innovation and “magic” that it brought to camera technology to other products, such as its Network Speakers, which fabricate up an integrated audio system that is exemplar for retail settings. Axis too teamed up with Cognimatics to develop analytic capabilities for its just View People Counter, which is too exemplar for retail environments, providing valuable commerce intelligence data.
Gren too provided a preview of its newest technology—the AXIS D2050-VE Network Radar Detector, an outdoor motion detector with radar technology that can provide cost-efficient perimeter protection and decrease groundless alarms. The Company is too previewing at ISC West a selection of products that will be launched later this year, including newfangled towering resolution fixed domes in AXIS M30 Series, AXIS P32 Series, and AXIS Q35 Series. Axis too unveiled its AXIS FA succession with modular cameras for highly discreet, cost-efficient video surveillance, and three newfangled additions to AXIS P13 succession that tender 4K resolution in replete frame rate and that enable coverage of big areas with towering image detail.
Following the breakfast I headed to the account for floor, which was abuzz with towering traffic and early indicators point to a record year in terms of attendance for this year’s show.
My first booth visit was at Legrand, a global specialist in electrical and digital structure infrastructures. Manny Linhares, director of strategy, IoT, told me about Eliot, a Legrand global IoT program, that “brings the swear of interoperability, providing the structure blocks and infrastructure to enable IoT and bring connectivity to where it is needed.”
Moving to the Qolsys showcase room, I was able to test drive the company’s second generation panel, which is sleeker and more powerful with some very gelid newfangled capabilities. Kevin Woodworth, director of technical account management, pointed out that the panel is the culmination of “all of the lessons they erudite from their first panel, and what they erudite from dealer feedback.” The panel has a 7-inch HD touchscreen with built-in 5MP camera and multiple wireless radios, as well as LTE connectivity, advanced encryption, a built-in router, a glass atomize detector, dual path connectivity and Bluetooth disarming, to designation just a few of the upgrades.
Over at the FLIR Systems booth, I was given a demo of the FLIR United VMS 8.0, the latest version of the company’s comprehensive, enterprise-level video management solution for managing video security operations. This year’s ASSA ABLOY Press Event focused on “Security in the IoT Age,” and Martin Huddart, president, looked at how IoT will palpate security. He aptly pointed out, “We are producing data, not products today,” noting that the key as they lag forward as an industry is “bringing impeccable these devices together.”
Next, I caught up with Denis Hebert, president, Feenics, a provider of cloud-based access control solutions. The company launched its enterprise retain by Feenics platform that delivers scalability, flexibility and advanced security. The newfangled cloud-based access control as service (ACaaS) platform integrates endemic visitor management, and incorporates RESTful API that dramatically simplifies integrating complementary systems plus connecting retain to applications outside of the organization. At the LifeSafety Power booth, Joe Holland, vice president of engineering, gave me a glimpse into how the company continues to “innovate the category of power,” with newfangled predictive analytics and faultfinding reporting capabilities. The company announced a breakthrough in connecting intelligent power management analytics to leading software manufacturers directly through bona fide Mercury Security hardware. “This truly enhances and expands the potential for systems integrators to tender remote power management to customers who will capitalize from predictive analysis and minute reporting on the health and well-being of their solutions,” said Holland.
I too met with Glen L. Smith, director, dealer operations, ADT, who told me about the worthy strides the ADT Dealer Program has made in the past year alone. In the belt of advocate for dealers, the company went from a net promoter score of -9 to 76 in just 18 months. How did they conclude this? “We asked their dealers what was broken,” said Smith, who celebrated that response time was a grandiose issue for dealers. In response to this concern, Smith said they went from a two-hour hold time to a zero hold time in just one year.
At the Bosch Security Systems booth, the company featured a completely newfangled portfolio of IP cameras and video analytics that extend surveillance beyond security, services that create recurring monthly revenue opportunities for dealers, and an all-in-one wireless multi-sensor that can be configured as a door/window contact, water or tilt sensor. Bosch too introduced In-Store Analytics, a solution to provide retailers with valuable insights on store traffic for improving operations, customer engagement and sales.
At the Alarm.com booth, Brian Lohse, director, commercial sales, talked about the company’s strategy to elevate what it has been doing on the residential side and bring that to the SMB space. On the residential side, the company’s open platform continues to expand integrations with a broad achieve of devices to advocate its dealer partners extend their footprint in the smart home. Alarm.com has too extended 4G LTE communications capabilities. In addition, Alarm.com highlighted its commerce Intelligence service that helps its dealer partners lower attrition by analyzing data points.
Next, I caught up with Jeff Whitney, VP of marketing for Arecont Vision, who went over some of the grandiose announcements for the company at the show, including Arecont Vision SNAPstream bandwidth reduction technology that supports multiple newfangled and existing megapixel cameras; SurroundVideo Omni G3 Omnidirectional multi-sensor cameras with remote setup; Arecont Vision Compact MicroBullet indoor/outdoor, day/night megapixel camera; and Arecont Vision MicroDome G2 with Integrated IR indoor/outdoor day/night ultra-low profile megapixel camera.
At the Pelco by Schneider Electric booth, Sharad Shekhar, CEO, Pelco SVP, video line of business, and Diane Feliciano, VP, global marketing, spoke about how the company has spent the final 12-18 months “transforming and repositioning the company” for the future. “We indulge in been making changes across the entire organization for the final yoke of years, from technology developments to newfangled sales, advocate and operations programming,” said Feliciano. I finished my day with a visit to the Altronix booth, where Kirby Han, knack director, took me through the company’s latest upgrades and newfangled products, including its newfangled NetWay Spectrum Fiber Solutions, its eBridge 800E EoC Receiver with Integral PoE Switch and its expanded NetWay Line with newfangled managed midspans and endspans.
I started day three at the Allegion Trends Talk breakfast, where I was able to discourse with Rob Martens, futurist and VP, strategy & partnerships, about how the company is leveraging the latest technologies to provide the best solutions for customers. “I am the tip of the spear when it comes to newfangled technology,” he said. “I create the chaos that the company has to deliver on.” Product wise, the company’s Engage platform is expanding to involve many more products, “so that level of connectivity is now getting rolled out and becoming a reality.”
At the Genetec booth, I spoke with Andrew Elvish, VP, marketing and product management, about the success of the company’s Mission Control system, which he said is “a game changer,” as the conclusion advocate system provides organizations with heightened levels of situational intelligence, visualization, and complete incident management capabilities. He too pointed to how the company’s Retail Intelligence application provides commerce intelligence and operational efficiencies. The company too highlighted the latest capabilities of its Synergis access control system, piece of its Security focus unified offering.
At the AMAG Technology booth, I met company president Kurt Takahashi, and spoke with Kim Rahfaldt, public relations manager. The company unveiled Symmetry CONNECT, its newfangled policy-based identity management system that delivers an simple to use, automated software platform to manage employee, contractor and visitor identities, fill regulatory audit and compliance requirements and reduce the administrative costs of the security team. At the HID Global booth, I spoke with Anthony Petrucci, director of global public relations and corporate communications, about the company’s newfangled indoor Location Services for workforce optimization, which won the SIA newfangled Product Showcase award. At the Milestone booth, I spoke with Courtney Dillon Pederson, communications manager, about the company’s strategic alliance with Lenel, which will initiate selling Milestone Systems Video Management Software (VMS) solutions directly through the Lenel Value Added Reseller (VAR) channel in North America. “We are really excited about this partnership and believe this is a worthy combination,” she said, noting that this alliance will reduce the total cost of ownership for users.
I next visited the Eagle Eye Systems/Brivo booth, and sat down with Dean Drako, president and CEO for Eagle Eye, who shared his views on the “continued adoption of cloud.” He too talked about the technology partnership with Hikvision to deliver customers a seamless and cybersecure cloud video surveillance solution. Eagle Eye too highlighted that is has added Camera Cyber Lockdown to impeccable its products, which blocks cameras from communicating with the Internet, stops them from being attacked and compromised. Drako too spoke about the company’s implementation of two-factor authentication, which “will be the standard for the industry stirring forward.”
At the IDIS booth, I was able to sit down with company president and COO Albert Ryu, who shared his views on how the company is poised to leverage technology to provide the customized solutions for customers. He too spoke about how the company, which is celebrating 20 years, is “bringing AI to security.” On the product side, the company featured H.265 IPC/NVR products, including the newfangled IDIS 12MP Super Fisheye Camera. too featured were newfangled low light and long distance solutions, and end-user focused enhancements to the company’s award-winning PTZ tracking controls, IDIS Smart UX Controls v2.0 and retail analytics/business intelligence suite IDIS VA in the Box. The company too highlighted its powerful 64-channel IDIS DR-8364 NVR, which delivers enterprise-level performance at an NVR price. Moving over to the Hanwha Techwin booth, Miguel Lazatin, director of product and channel marketing, North America, walked me through impeccable of the newfangled features and capabilities of the Wisenet 5 chip, which was unveiled recently. The newfangled chip powers the Wisenet X series, a newfangled product line that features 27 models split up between 2MP and 5MP camera lines. Features involve 150dB WDR performance and lucid images in extreme low light conditions, convenient USB port is too available for simple setup and installation, as well as license-free audio and video analytics, dual SD card slot for increased onboard storage and image stabilization using gyro sensors. The company too announced that it is investing $100 million to create a security-only manufacturing facility in Vietnam.
Next, Dahua product marketing manager Jennifer Hackenburg, gave me a tour of the booth, showing me how the company is embracing “deep learning,” pointing out that the company is “ahead of the curve” in leveraging impeccable of the enhanced capabilities that profound learning can provide. The company announced that it is working with NVIDIA to bring artificial intelligence (AI) functionality to its next-generation profound learning products. I next visited with Jim Hoffpauir, president, Zenitel, at the Vingtor Stentofon booth. He showed me how the company’s Turbine Intercom Station can provide a army of solutions, in any setting, from schools to airports to military and government applications. He too talked about his dedication to educating customers on how to pick the perquisite system, and he created a scorecard to follow. At the Sureview Sytems booth, Simon Morgan, chief technology officer, gave me a demo SureView PSIM Solutions, which he pointed out, “improve security, optimize operations and reduce costs. He showed me how the Immix CC Platform delivers more integrations, simple deployment and simple operation. He said SureView Immix CC Simplifies PSIM deployment and operation, featuring “intuitive UI, more integrations and unique architecture, which deliver unprecedented ease of operation and versatility.”
Next, I visited Ditek, a surge protection company that works closely with the security industry to protect vital systems and rig from being damaged by power surges, saving money in the process. Jorge Andino, realm sales engineer, pointed out that the company does this by providing a site survey for each project, giving that customer the perquisite surge protection rig to meet their needs. “Our surge protection rig acts as the sacrificial lamb, preventing costly damage to the equipment.”
I finished my day speaking with Rick Caruthers, executive VP, Galaxy Control Systems, who told me about the company’s newfangled announcement that is “committing resources and manpower to providing cloud solutions to their customers,” he said. The Galaxy Cloud Concierge solution is a complete turnkey, cloud-based, fully hosted and managed access control and monitoring solution that includes professional 24/7 management and supports industry standard access technologies.
On Friday I started the day at the Morse Watchmans booth speaking with George Lawson, account executive, and Joseph Granitto, COO, about the company’s key control and access management security systems, which are getting smarter and safer with a lot more functionality. “We elevate feedback from customers to add newfangled features and fabricate their products easier to use,” said Lawson. In addition to an improved motherboard powering its systems, the company is unveiling a newfangled enterprise-based software system. And its Asset Watcher, which the company tested exhaustively over the past year, is set to forward out soon as well.
At the Pivot3 booth, I spoke with Brandon Reich, surveillance commerce leader, about the company’s strategic original rig manufacturer (OEM) relationship with intelligent Security Systems (ISS), an innovator in the evolution of advanced video management and video analytics software. Under the agreement, ISS will license the Pivot3 hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform and integrate it with ISS video management software (VMS) to supply more robust security intelligence and video storage options to customers. “We are really excited about that partnership,” said Reich. “We can provide a worthy solution set together.”
At the Eizo booth, I spoke with Keisuke Akiba, product and marketing manager, and Brian Cote, about the company’s security and surveillance monitoring solutions. The IP decoding monitors forward equipped with visibility enhancement technology for improving the clarity of video footage in actual time. Akiba demonstrated the multi-monitor flexibility and showed me the 4k IPS 31.5-inch monitor with 3840 x 2160 endemic resolution.
Over at the Boon Edam booth, Tracie Thomas, marketing manager, gave me an overview of the company’s many entry solutions, as well as word on the company’s expanding sales and customer service staff to advocate record sales growth. The company too announced the expansion of its product-training schedule, with more programs and locations. And, soon, Boon Edam will tender its revolving door specifications on the ARCOM MasterSpec platform, which is widely used by architect and design firms in North America for commercial buildings.
At the 3xLOGIC booth, Suzi Abell, tradeshow and events manager, shared account for news, including the company’s newfangled integrated, hosted video and access control solution for the SMB market and the company’s partnership with Bold Technologies to tender an advanced video solution. The companies recently completed integration of Bold’s ManitouNEO with the 3xLOGIC VIGIL video platform, which supports cloud-managed video. The company too announced the release of a newfangled multi-sensor camera and updated VIGIL software.
At the Panasonic booth, Charlie Hare, national category manger, security and evidence management solutions, walked me through some of the company’s grandiose announcements at the show, including the company’s expanded portfolio of i-PRO Extreme Surveillance Technology and its newfangled i-PRO Extreme PTZ Camera with Advanced Analytics, as well as its latest video surveillance solutions. The i-PRO features a newfangled chip set that produces “amazing picture quality,” said Hare.
Over at the ReconaSense booth, Clayton Brown, product manager, described the company’s next-generation situational awareness platform, which provides “the tools to execute real-time faultfinding analysis,” he said. John Carter, the CTO of ReconaSense, is a former NASA engineer. The software leverages the IoT and grandiose data with access control and video analytics to drive “proactive response” across diverse systems. By connecting the dots and alerting operators of suspicious events, the technology facilitates better decision-making and optimal resource allocation.
My final booth visit was over at NVIDIA, which was showcasing some of its latest IVA-related, AI technology for smart and safe cities, featuring many partners such as IBM, Hikvision and Dahua. Deepu Talla, VP/GM, autonomous machines, showed me how the company’s GPU computing is not only powering its many partners but “driving the latest applications for safety and security in AI cities,” he said, including public safety, traffic management, deportment analysis, video analytics, anomaly detection, facial recognition, expeditious forensics, parking management and robotics.

This is the fourth in HBR’s succession of interviews with some of the world’s recognized leaders—individuals who indulge in led not a company but a country. Each leader illuminates something different about the theme of leadership: the property of thinking, the sense of responsibility, the style of management. The qualities of the individuals vary, in piece as a reflection of the times in which they served, in piece as an illustration of the values and approaches each brought to the assignment of managing some of the world’s largest and most involved organizations.
In 1976, Jimmy Carter—farmer, businessman, former naval officer, Georgia state senator and governor, author, and church leader—was elected president of the United States. With the remembrance of Watergate silent fresh in the public’s mind, President Carter appealed to voters by calling for rectitude and integrity in government—the requisite for basic values guiding the country’s leaders.
While in office, President Carter successfully championed a long and comprehensive legislative agenda, including passage of a national energy policy, deregulation of transportation industries and banking, and civil service reform. President Carter too negotiated a historic peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, established diplomatic relations with China, concluded the SALT II treaty, and gained ratification of the Panama Canal treaty. During his administration, the country was tested by an inflation-fanning oil embargo and the taking of American hostages in Iran. Both events gave rise to a sentiment of American vulnerability to outside forces.
Since leaving office, President Carter has continued to write books, lecture, teach, and contribute his services to community work.
HBR: What makes a person a leader?
Jimmy Carter: The ability to accommodate the pressures of a competitive world is one of the prerequisites to success. During the difficult years of working one’s course to the top, leadership qualities are tested. There may be tens of thousands of people who indulge in the ambition to be president of the United States, or president of IBM, or of universal Motors. But you don’t inherit the presidency of a democratic nation or any of these other positions of leadership. Only a few individuals indulge in the capacity to meet the competitive test.
What qualities determine success?
The ability to travail with other people, the capacity to expand one’s intellect and one’s heart as years evaporate by, and to see the broader dimensions of the future. Most important, it’s necessary not to awe the prospect of failure but to be determined not to fail. If a leader is not willing to attempt things that might not succeed, then he has puny faith in himself or the goal he seeks to achieve.
How conclude values shape leadership?
High virtuous and ethical standards are essential, and they don’t change from one job to another, or from one level of authority to another. Honesty, truthfulness, integrity, unselfishness—these are always there. And whenever a leader violates these basic principles, through arrogance or through ignorance, there’s a derogation of duty.
Leaders too indulge in a duty to understand the needs of people who depend on them. I’ve never been a victim of racial discrimination. I’ve never been deprived of basic human rights. I’ve never suffered from hunger or lack of shelter. As a businessman, a church leader, and a political leader, I became intensely sensible of the needs of others in the profound South during segregation, although I wasn’t always as courageous as I should indulge in been in trying to alleviate these problems. But understanding the needs and suffering of others is a vital element for successful leadership.
Finally, there’s a legal framework within which a leader must operate. The president of the country or of a company should panoply an exemplary commitment to the law. Any leader who deviates from compliance with the law, or compliance with the principles of a corporation, sends devastating waves of damage throughout the organization itself. Such conduct lowers the standards of performance of everyone who is sensible of the violation.
Is there anyone who you feel embodies these qualities of leadership?
Harry Truman. He’s benevolent of a hero for me in this century. I tried to measure up to his standards. I don’t believe Harry Truman ever told the American people a lie. I don’t believe Harry Truman ever violated the law. He had a respect for history and a respect for the office of president. As a consequence, I am certain that Harry Truman would never indulge in done anything to bring discredit to his office.
As president, what were your experiences in dealing with commerce leaders? Both disappointments and successes.
We had some disappointments at first. For instance, even before I became president I could see that the U.S. automobile industry was making two very grave mistakes. One was the lack of fuel efficiency, and the other was environmental pollution.
So I called in to my cabinet room the chief executive officers—the chairmen of the board and the presidents of every automobile manufacturer in the nation—along with the autoworkers’ union representatives. I told them they were going to pass some very strict air pollution and energy conservation laws. My hope was that they would elevate the initiative perquisite then and entrust themselves to producing energy-efficient automobiles that would comply with these strict standards. Their unanimous response was that it simply was not possible. I told them that automakers in Sweden and in Japan were doing it, so it was possible. But they insisted that they just couldn’t fabricate a profit on it because their profit came from the larger automobiles. So they refused to modify their designs.
Eventually they passed a law that required them, incrementally and annually, to improve their automobiles’ efficiency and to comply with environmental standards. In the meantime, American manufacturers lost a lot of the domestic market. That was a case of the automobile industry being unwilling to study to the future. They could not see the long-run advantage, even though it might prove to be costly in the close-in years.
In general, however, I believe the commerce community was quite helpful and enlightened when I was in office. There was a tremendous improvement in the efficient employ of energy while I was there. The laws that they finally passed after four replete years of tedious negotiation are silent on the books. And now they can sustain any given ribald national product using about 30% less energy than they did, say, ten years ago.
Another commitment my administration made, with which most commerce leaders helped me, was deregulating the private enterprise system. They deregulated oil and gas, airlines, railroads, trucks, the financial institutions, and communications, including radio and television. And they couldn’t indulge in done that without the advocate and leadership of enlightened members of the commerce community. They agreed to establish their faith in a more competitive free enterprise system. In general, even including the airlines, U.S. industry and consumers indulge in gained substantial benefits from deregulation.
How does becoming president change the course you believe and what you believe about in making decisions?
Becoming president generates and demands a much greater awareness of what one’s predecessors indulge in done. A leader must understand history, either within the corporation or within the nation. Quite often an awareness of what has gone before gives grandiose guidance about how to ply current challenges or opportunities and helps avoid repeating mistakes. Leadership too requires a broad concept of your responsibility to others and your future sequel on them. As you rise in corporate or political positions, you indulge in an increasingly broad impact on other people’s lives.
How would you recount your management style?
I indulge in always tried to circumscribe the number of specific duties that I had to manage. Where I could, I would delegate authority to others whom I trusted. I’ve done everything I could to master those duties that I considered uniquely mine, that no one else could perform. To conclude that, I would entrust the time and concentrated exertion necessary to evaporate into considerable detail. Management, in my view, requires mastery of pertinent details about one’s own unique duties.
As president, you were constantly engaged in negotiation and mediation—with commerce leaders, with the Congress, in the Middle East. You’ve even written a engage on mediation, Negotiation: The Alternative to Hostility. Why is negotiation so important?
Every leader has to understand at least the rudiments of negotiation—because a chief executive officer in the White House, in the boardroom, or in the corporate executive offices is faced every day with potential conflict, with immediate subordinates, with the workers in the plant, with the sales force, or perhaps with competitors.
All negotiations, whether in government or business, require certain things. One is a proper respect for the people across from you whose opinions disagree from yours. You can’t be arrogant. You’ve got to give the people with whom you’re contending your understanding—not your agreement but your understanding. It requires some humility to recognize that you’re not inherently better than they are.
A successful negotiation has to be deliberate and unanimous. Then you indulge in an agreement. You too requisite to understand when an intermediary, an arbitrator or mediator, would advocate and when a direct approach is best. This has an faultfinding application in business. Altercations between two grandiose corporations can often be resolved most easily through direct talks between the chief executive officers. The acknowledgment that they can’t conclude anything they want to the environment is not an acknowledgment of weakness. Dealing with limitations wisely and successfully is a mark of greatness.
Business should readily understand this concept. Limits are taken for granted in the competitive arena. Alternative products are on the market. Competitors are striving to be better, more desirable, or more efficient than you are. You too are limited by your customers’ desires and tastes. You can’t imbue any cost you want for most products. In business, limits are acknowledged and expected. So there’s no sentiment of inferiority. The selfsame principle should apply to political leadership.
Yet that message of limits and restraints is tough to convey, particularly in politics.
That’s exactly right. And I was not always successful in getting it across. It’s always much more common for someone to say, it’s okay to conclude whatever you want, we’re never going to rush out of oil, forests, or other raw materials; to divulge the American people the United States is so powerful, they can always live a lucky life, regardless of what happens to the repose of the world; to command it doesn’t matter how big their federal deficits are—our country is so strong, they can survive it. It doesn’t matter what happens to the nation’s agricultural community—we indulge in enough land to survive. It doesn’t matter about human rights violations around the world, because their people are secure in their basic rights.
This course of thinking is very attractive to the American people. These are messages they dote to hear. They don’t indulge in to worry about others, we’ve got it made, and because of their worthy blessings, which are obvious, they must be God’s chosen people. And if someone is poor, or destitute, or deprived, it must be because God looks on them with disfavor. To me, that is an incorrect approach to the world’s problems. But it is a politically attractive approach.
Part of leadership is telling people word they may not want to hear. Is another piece willingness to hear unfavorable word from advisers?
It’s a grave mistake for any leader to be surrounded by sycophants. It’s just as erroneous to listen only to advisers who indulge in a homogeneous approach to the faultfinding issues of the day. The stronger and more self-assured a leader is the more likely he or she is to hunt diversity of advice. If you are insecure or don’t indulge in self-confidence in yourself, then you’re apt to listen to a narrow achieve of advice.
I deliberately chose advisers with disparate points of view. The media criticized this as indicating disharmony in my administration. But especially in matters of alien policy, I wanted the very conservative, stable, and cautionary reaction of the state Department on the one hand and the more dynamic, innovative advice from the National Security Council staff on the other hand. Sometimes the two points of view conflicted. But in alien policy and defense, the final decisions were always mine. I wanted a broad assortment of opinions before I made a judgment. That’s too why I brought in to the Oval Office members of the Congress from both houses and both parties, and listened to them: to fabricate certain again that I had diversity.
Do they anticipate too much or the wrong things from their leaders?
In general, the American people credit the president with exorbitant power and authority in the realm of economics. The president doesn’t indulge in much to conclude with the inflation rate, for instance. A little, but not much. He can palpate the budget deficit. In economics and finance, the president must participate authority with a tremendous free enterprise system and with the Congress and the Federal Reserve Board.

Because there is a misapprehension among the American people about this delineation of power, one responsibility of the executive officer is to define his or her authority and influence properly. I was not against using my legal authority to a maximum degree, but I was very watchful to fabricate certain that it was legal and proper when I did exercise authority. As stated earlier, I too consulted with others as much as possible.
How much consultation went into your conclusion and policy making?
Whenever I made a conclusion concerning alien policy or defense, I worked it out in advance, initially with the secretary of state, secretary of defense, the joint chiefs of staff, the National Security Council, and the key members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans. They would indulge in a consensus before they made a major lag on the Panama Canal treaty, for example, or with the negotiations on SALT II. As a result, Congress never reversed or refused a unique proposal I made and changed my defense budget proposals minimally. It is extremely faultfinding to build into initial discussions the people who will eventually be responsible for the final definition or implementation of a proposal.
A big amount of consultation, however, increases the danger of leaks. What was your view of keeping information secret?
If you’re a political leader, you indulge in to pick about the level of secretiveness. In general, I believe that some secrets contribute toward leaders’ misusing and violating their positions. When secrecy is emphasized, it tends to be used sooner or later to cover up mistakes. And if those mistakes later become public, they will be more embarrassing than if they were acknowledged openly in the first place.
My inclination was to indulge in as few secrets as possible. In general, they sought to expose the facts to the American people. I had envisioned publicizing my successes for political purposes in the 1980 election year. But, unfortunately, two things happened: the Iranian revolution precipitated a more than doubling of oil prices in less than 12 months, and the hostages were taken. The political and economic climate precluded my letting the public know what I had accomplished. But there has to be a combination of initiatives and publicity. Only by educating people on what you indulge in already done can you retain adequate political advocate to pursue present and future goals.
What conclude you deem is the perquisite course for leaders in this country to employ their power?
Our country is certainly the most powerful nation on earth. Economically, militarily, politically, sometimes even morally and ethically. But that doesn’t connote they can employ this tremendous power to subjugate other people or to impose their will on others against their wishes. Or to obtrude into the internal affairs of another country, unless their own security is directly threatened.
We should employ their influence, not to create or sustain contest and animosity and suffering throughout the world but to alleviate it. And although they indulge in the most powerful military obligate on earth, they should employ that obligate with worthy reticence. Whenever possible, they should employ diplomacy and negotiation to alleviate friction, to bring disputing parties together, to resolve matters through peaceful means.
In the case of the Middle East, my predecessors and I were always enthusiastic to advocate any peace process that was initiated. Anyone in the Middle East who took one minute step toward peace knew there was an enthusiastic confederate in Washington. To me that was a proper employ of U.S. power. They didn’t inject troops into the Middle East. They didn’t bomb villages or bomb Beirut. They sought opportunities to bring people together to travail out a peaceful agreement, with their government acting as mediator.
